Presentation Title: Development Trends of AIDC BBU Market and Technology & Outlook of Niobium-based Solutions

Abstract:

As AI computing density continues to increase and rack power approaches the megawatt level, 800V HVDC is emerging as an important power supply and backup architecture for next-generation AI data centers. As the energy storage unit closest to computing loads, the BBU is evolving from a conventional short-duration backup power solution into an integrated support system capable of millisecond-level power takeover, high-frequency load smoothing, and active peak shaving. This presentation will systematically introduce EVE’s BBU system solutions for 800V HVDC architectures. It will focus on the design philosophy and validation progress of EVE’s self-developed 21700 LFP high-power cells in terms of high-rate discharge, thermal safety, long service life, and system integration, while also sharing the application of 800V BBU modules in GW-scale AI data centers.
To address the new challenges posed by high-frequency AI load fluctuations, the presentation will also explore a hybrid energy storage architecture combining supercapacitors/lithium-ion capacitors with LFP batteries. By leveraging the complementary advantages of different energy storage technologies in power response and energy support, this architecture can enhance transient response while reducing pulse-induced battery aging. In addition, the presentation will discuss the application potential of niobium-based high-power anode materials in next-generation high-power cells and lithium-ion capacitors, examining both the opportunities and challenges in rate capability, cycle life, voltage-window compatibility, and large-scale deployment. These insights are intended to support the technological evolution of short-duration backup power systems for AI data centers.
